FRIENDS OF MICHELTORENA IS HERE TO HELP

Friends of Micheltorena (FOM) is the volunteer, non-profit fundraising entity for Micheltorena Elementary School.  FOM is comprised of parents, teachers and members of the local community.  Ideally, every family is a member of FOM and gets involved! 

WHY DO WE NEED FOM? 

Budget cuts! Thanks to reduced funding, our school is not able to offer as many programs and resources as we’d like. Last year, we experienced an especially big drop ($60,000 less than the year before). In the past ten years, our Supplemental Funds have gone down 90% — from nearly $500,000 to just $50,000. The funds we do receive cover only basic expenses. . Our school wants more than that. That’s where FOM comes in. Without FOM, Micheltorena wouldn’t have all the great features that make our school special.

WHAT FOM SUPPORTS

Because of FOM’s fundraising and volunteer efforts, our students can have:

   •     enhanced arts programs (music/orchestra, visual, theater, dance)

   •     enhanced PE program (with PrimeTime Sports) and new equipment

   •     after school enrichment classes

   •     bus rides to go on field trips

   •     “Wonder of Reading” Library with new library books

   •     Community Garden

   •     California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden

   •     EnrichLA program in the garden

   •     additional computers in the computer lab

   •     School Psychologist one extra day per week

   •     Teacher Assistants & Amity Interns

   •     educational materials and books for the Dual Language Program

   •     playground set in the lower yard

   •     campus beautification (murals, Peace Path, greening, trees, labyrinth, etc)

   •     community events (Kindergarten Orientation Social, Pumpkin Fest and Día de la Familia)

Last year, FOM raised $219,548 and spent $236,248 to support our school. Here is how those funds were distributed:

HOW FOM RAISES MONEY

Each year, FOM hosts several events to raise money for the school, including: Fall Pledge Drive, March-a-Thon, Spring Auction and Michel’s Night Out. Last year, we also introduced our new FOMO cards, which provide discounts at local participating businesses for people who donate $100 or more to FOM. We have also successfully raised money through grants. (For example, we now have a California Native Plant & Butterfly Garden, thanks to the parents who wrote grants to fund it.) FOM IS GROWING

We’ve made giant leaps in the number of programs we support and the amounts we are able to fundraise. Not that long ago, FOM was raising $25,000 annually. Last year, we raised $219,548!

Now, we have to raise even more, because just as our Supplemental Funds are going down, our expenses are growing.

DONATE WHAT YOU CAN 

We need everyone to pitch in. Keep in mind that nearly half our school is Title One, which means these families qualify for free or reduced lunches. So we ask that those who can give more, do so.

How much should I donate?

We developed a sliding scale:

If you earn…

Less than $50k/year, suggested donation = $120 or $10/month 

$50 – 100k/year, suggested donation = $420 or $35/month

$100 – 150k/year, suggested donation = $1020 or $85/month

$150 – 200k/year, suggested donation = $1800 or $150/month

More than $200k/year, suggested donation = $3600 or $300/month

These amounts are just suggestions. Donate what you can. Every dollar is appreciated.

Or, if you’re a Kinder Family, we suggest that you donate the equivalent of one month’s preschool tuition.


OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL IS $300,000

In order to do this, we need to raise $150k during Fall Pledge Drive. With 100% participation from all families we can reach this goal. No contribution is too small!

WHAT IS FALL PLEDGE DRIVE?

Fall Pledge Drive is our biggest fundraiser. Last year, about 50% of our annual funds were raised during this time, with a participation rate of about 40% of Micheltorena families. The closer we can get to 100% participation, the better our chances of reaching our fundraising goal. So now, more than ever, we need your help!

Fall Pledge Drive has a Halloween theme! The last day of the drive is Pumpkin Fest, October 26.


DOES FOM’S FUNDRAISING JEOPARDIZE THE SCHOOL’S TITLE 1 STATUS?

Absolutely not. FOM helps augment funds now missing from our school’s State and Federal budgets. FOM’s efforts are independent of those monies and serve to make up for funds that are lacking. Without FOM or funds raised another way, our children would simply not have many basic services nor the super cool additions (after-school, garden, PE, enhanced art, etc.). Our school needs FOM to remain the vibrant institution that we all love.

HOW CAN I HELP, OTHER THAN FINANCIALLY?

In any way you can, in any role you are interested in. Volunteering for FOM is a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Our community of kids, parents and teachers continues to grow closer every year.  We are all in this together. HOW DO I DONATE?

You can donate online. Our PayPal account lets you donate one lump sum or set up recurring monthly donations. You can donate by cash or check made payable to Friends of MIcheltorena, and drop it off in the office or give it to a costumed parent volunteer. All donations are 100% tax deductible. The tax ID for FOM is 81-4428143

Fun incentive: This year, any class that reaches 90% or more parent participation in Fall Pledge Drive will win a popsicle party!

WHAT IS A FOMO CARD?


Anyone who donates $100 or more to FOM gets our FOMO card. These cards are part of our initiative to SHOP LOCAL, SUPPORT LOCAL. With our FOMO card you can access discounts and benefits from local businesses that are part of this program. The card is good for one full year: October 2019 - October 2020. When you donate $100, your name is added to a list and you can pick up your FOMO card in the main office. For more information, go here: fomocard.org.
