Mrs. Kia grew up in Whittier, California. She is a triplet with two identical brothers and the oldest of five siblings. She is a first generation American, with Dutch/German & Indonesian heritage. She graduated with a 4.0 from California State University, Fullerton in 2000, majoring in Liberal Studies as a President's Scholar. She earned her teaching credential in 2001. She taught for eleven years (from 2001-2012) at Ocean View Elementary, in the East Whittier City School District, where she also served as yearbook adviser for her school. During that time, she married her husband Stephen (2007) and moved to Eagle Rock. From 2012-2016, she took 4 years off to be a stay-at-home mom to her two children, Connor & Chloe. During this time, she stayed involved in her local community, serving as President of MOMS Club NELA where she coordinated playdates, workshops, and community events for other local parents in Eagle Rock and Highland Park. She also helped to begin and supervise a free K-12 tutoring program in Eagle Rock, staffed by Occidental College student volunteers. In November 2016, Mrs. Kia joined the Micheltorena Family as a fifth grade teacher.
Her favorite part of teaching is getting to know students individually and helping them develop their unique interests and talents. She believes students learn best when they get to cooperate with others, play learning games, move their bodies, and experience curriculum in a hands-on way with plenty of student choice. She enjoys making learning fun for students. She likes helping students stay organized. She prefers to communicate with families through Class Dojo, but e-mail is also a great way to communicate with her. When she's not working, she enjoys reading, practicing Spanish on her Duolingo app, watching TV and movies, playing the keyboard/ piano (mostly by ear), cooking & baking, playing word games, traveling, and having fun with her kids. Her favorite food is chocolate. She and her family currently reside in nearby Highland Park.
